Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 60412
ux-ctest: Context menu for a misspelled word does not allow to reach the normal context menu
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:20:06 UTC
Context menu for a misspelled word always shows suggestions how to correct the word, but does not show any entry of the normal context menu for text (like formatting). Recommendation: Allow to switch to the normal context menu or merge both menus.
keyword: ux-ctest
target 2.x for usability test results with prio 2
Concept ideas: 1) add regular context menu to the end of the spellcheck items or 2) add regular context menu to the end of the spellcheck items as submenu entry.
This issue is handled by the following spec. (section 1.3): http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/linguistic/Set_Language_Attribute_for_Text.odt
set owner to CD, the iTeam Lead of CWS: langstatusbar The new context menu for misspelled words seems to address exactly this usability issue. Can you confirm this?
cd: Accepted.
mmp: no, the language control feature does not address that. Idea: could we move the spell check menu to "CTRL-Click", similar to Smart Tags and Hyperlink execution? So the normal "right click" would always execute the context menu. Of course we would need a quick help text as in the mentioned other cases. And people that switch off contextual help again will complain.
cd: Feature freeze passed. Set target to OOo 3.x.
*** Issue 89594 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
issue 89594 describes this as "hugely annoying" particularly when testing OOo Beta versions and using random character sequences because that's faster and wanting to open the standard context menu.
One certainly doesn't want to add all pup-up menu commands from Writer to the pop-up menu for misspelled words. This could blow up the menu to 28 commands (including up to seven suggestions for correct spelling). I want to see the most common commands added: cut, copy & paste. Any other additional menu item needs to be justified based on usage tracking data. BTW, I do object against marking an invalid issue as a duplicate of this one. OOo is a productivity suite, for real work. Though possible, "typing random chracters for testing purposes" is not a supported use case.
Changed to priority 3. This isn't a stopper for a release. (Issues with p1/p2 with keyword 'accessibility' and/or 'usability' are one category for stoppers. See http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease34#Release_relevant_issues)
